Where Have They Gone

I just finished reading Quitting Church by Julia Duin and it was awesome. It's a short book, 186 pages that read very easily. I couldn't put it down and I could relate to some of the issues she brings up in the church today. She doesn't pick on one particular denomination and collected data across the spectrum. As I read, my mind was racing ahead saying "yes, that's it, that's how it is with me!" I felt a connection with her as she described different churches she attended, hoping to find one that would meet a specific need. I could hardly wait to read the last chapter called Bringing Them Back, because that's where my heart is. How can I reach out to those who are 35 and older who have been discouraged, disillusioned with organized church? I think I'll start with prayer, (John 16:24). Additionally, I need to start paying attention to those who visit our church and make an effort to get to know them. Then I need to take it one step further and get them plugged into a small group that can care and nurture them. For those who are seeing their churches dwindle in attendance, this book can help you discover the many different reasons why people are leaving and for you to take an active approach in helping people rediscover the joys of fellowship and true christian living....
